Push notifications are the alerts Raven shows on a computer or phone, even when Raven is not open. An admin has to set them up once for the whole site. Until then, nobody can turn them on.

Raven sends push notifications through Raven Cloud. Raven Cloud is a service run by the Raven team at cloud.ravenchat.ai. Your site sends each notification to Raven Cloud, and Raven Cloud delivers it to people's browsers and phones.

## Who does what

| Step | Role needed |
| :--- | :--- |
| Enter the Raven Cloud keys | System Manager |
| Register the site on Raven Cloud | System Manager |
| Sync device data to Raven Cloud | Raven Admin |

A Raven admin who is not a System Manager sees the **Notifications** tab, but can't change the keys.

## Sites on Frappe Cloud

On Frappe Cloud, Raven registers the site with Raven Cloud by itself, in the background. You don't need a Raven Cloud account or keys. If push notifications don't work after a few minutes, a System Manager can open **Settings > Notifications** and click **Register Site on Raven Cloud** to try again.

## Set up Raven Cloud

1. Go to cloud.ravenchat.ai and create an account.
2. Add your site there. Copy the API key and API secret it gives you.
3. In Raven, open **Settings > Notifications**.
4. Leave **Push Notification Server URL** as `https://cloud.ravenchat.ai`. Change it only if you run your own Raven Cloud.
5. Paste the key into **Push Notification API Key**.
6. Paste the secret into **API Secret**.
7. Click **Save**.
8. Click **Register Site on Raven Cloud**.

When registration works, Raven shows "Site registered on Raven Cloud. You can now send push notifications." The button then reads **Re-Register Site on Raven Cloud**.

Raven registers the site under the domain name of its URL. If your site moves to a new domain, click **Re-Register Site on Raven Cloud**, then sync.

## Sync device data

Click **Sync Data to Raven Cloud** to send Raven Cloud the list of devices that already have notifications turned on. New devices are sent on their own, so you only need this after you register again, for example after a domain change or a switch from the old Frappe Cloud service. The sync runs in the background.

The button shows once the site is registered.

## What people do next

Each person turns on push notifications for their own browser or phone. See [Push notifications](wiki:0e6987e961d0).

:::note
Raven does not send push notifications from a site in developer mode, or from a site whose URL starts with `http://localhost` or `http://127.0.0.1`.

## Sites that used the Frappe Cloud service

Older versions of Raven could send push notifications through a Frappe Cloud service. The current Raven app only supports Raven Cloud. If your site still uses the old service, **Settings > Notifications** shows "This site sends push notifications through Frappe Cloud."

To move to Raven Cloud:

1. Click **Switch to Raven Cloud**.
2. Enter the API key and API secret from cloud.ravenchat.ai.
3. Click **Save**.
4. Click **Register Site on Raven Cloud**.
5. Click **Sync Data to Raven Cloud**.

Steps 1 to 4 need the System Manager role. Step 5 needs the Raven Admin role. Admins who are not System Managers see "Ask a System Manager to switch." in place of the button.
