Any member of a workspace can create a channel in it, unless the workspace allows only admins to do so. You become the admin of every channel you create.
## Create a channel
1. In the sidebar, click **⋮** next to the workspace name.
2. Click **Create a new channel**.
3. Enter a **Name**.
4. Enter a **Description**, if you like.
5. Under **Channel Type**, pick **Public**, **Private** or **Open**.
6. Click **Create Channel**.
The channel is created when you click **Create Channel**, and it opens behind the dialog. New channels are public unless you pick another type. See [What is a channel](wiki:1246dc2c43fc) for what each type means.
You can also create a channel from **Settings > Channels**. Click **Create Channel** at the top right.
## Add people
For a public or private channel, the dialog then moves on to **Add Members**.
1. Search for people by name or email.
2. Click each person you want to add.
3. Click the button at the bottom right. It shows how many people you picked, such as **Add 3 members**.
To add people later, click **Skip for now**. See [Add and remove members](wiki:57096b24fd76).
An open channel has no **Add Members** step. Everyone in the workspace is already a member.
## Channel names
- A name is 3 to 50 characters long.
- It can use letters in any language, numbers and hyphens. It can't start with a hyphen.
- Capital letters are changed to lowercase, and spaces are changed to hyphens as you type.
- Two channels in the same workspace can't have the same name.
The number at the right end of the name box shows how many characters you have left.

A workspace admin can turn on **Only admins can create channels** in the workspace settings. Then only workspace admins can create channels in that workspace. Other members get an error when they try. See [Workspace settings](wiki:2f83b0be6846).

## On the mobile app
On the **Home** tab, tap **⋮** next to the workspace name, then tap **Create a new channel**. The form opens from the bottom of the screen and has the same steps.
