You join a public channel yourself. You are in every open channel of your workspace from the start. To join a private channel, a channel admin has to add you.

## Join a public channel

1. Open the channel from the sidebar, or from **Settings > Channels**.
2. Click **Join** where the message box would be.

You can read a public channel before you join it. Until you join, the channel shows "You're not a member of this channel." in place of the message box.

In an open channel, the message box is always there. You can write in it right away.

## See every channel in a workspace

1. In the sidebar, click **⋮** next to the workspace name.
2. Click **Manage Channels**.

This opens **Settings > Channels**. It lists every channel you can see in the workspace, with its description.

- Use the boxes at the top to pick a workspace, search by name or description, and show only some channels.
- Click a channel's name to open it.
- Click the join button on a row to join that channel. Channels you are in show **Joined**.
- Archived channels are at the bottom of the list, with an **Archived** badge.
- The bell on a row mutes the channel. See [Mute a channel](wiki:1fa5e4f8bfb5).

Open channels have no join or leave button, because everyone is a member.

| Filter | Options |
| :--- | :--- |
| Workspace | The workspaces you are a member of. |
| Membership | **All Channels**, **Joined Channels** (channels you are in), **Other Channels** (channels you are not in). |
| Type | **All Types**, **Public**, **Private**, **Open**. |

:::tip
If public channels you haven't joined are missing from your sidebar, check **Only show channels that I have joined** in your preferences. See [Organize your sidebar](wiki:ada77c4c6037).

## Leave a channel

1. Click the channel name at the top of the channel.
2. Click **Settings**.
3. Click **Leave channel**.
4. Click **Leave**.

You can also leave from **Settings > Channels**. Click the leave button on the channel's row. This leaves the channel straight away, without asking.

What happens next depends on the channel type:

| Type | After you leave |
| :--- | :--- |
| Public | You can rejoin at any time. |
| Private | You can't see the channel any more. A channel admin has to add you again. |
| Open | You can't leave an open channel. |

If you are the only admin, the member who joined first becomes the new admin. If you are the last member of a private channel, the channel is archived.

## On the mobile app

Open a public channel and tap **Join** at the bottom of the screen.

To leave, tap the channel name at the top, tap **Settings**, then tap **Leave channel**.

**Manage Channels** is not on the mobile app.
