A thread is a side conversation on one message in a channel or a direct message. Replies stay in the thread, so a long discussion does not crowd the channel, and only the people in the thread are notified.

## Start a thread

Point to a message and click the thread button on its bar, or click **Create thread** in the message's **More actions** menu.

A message can have one thread. You can't start a thread inside a thread, or in a channel you are not a member of.

## Thread members

These people are in a thread from the start:

- The person who started it.
- The person who wrote the message.
- People mentioned in the message, if they are members of the channel.

People mentioned in a reply are added too, if they are members of the channel. Everyone in the thread gets push notifications for new replies. See [Push notifications](wiki:0e6987e961d0).

If you are not in the thread, click **Join** in its message box to take part. You can only join a thread in a channel you are a member of.

## Reply in a thread

Click the reply count under the message to open the thread, and write in its message box. **Esc**, or **×** at the top right, closes it.

## Leave or delete a thread

Click **⋮** at the top of the thread.

- **Leave thread** stops your notifications for the thread. You can join it again later.
- **Delete thread** deletes the thread and all its replies, for everyone. The message it started from stays in the channel. Only the person who started the thread can delete it.

## The Threads page

**Threads** in the left rail lists threads from every workspace. **Participating** lists the threads you take part in. **Other** lists threads in your channels that you don't take part in.

**Open in channel** at the top of a thread goes to it in its channel. The threads of one channel are on the **Threads** tab of its [details panel](wiki:bacaf7b1fa8e).

## On the mobile app

Tap **Threads** at the bottom of the screen.

To start a thread, touch and hold a message, then tap **Create thread**. In an open thread, tap **⋮** for **Go to channel**, **Leave thread** and **Delete thread**.
