Every message has actions: reply, forward, copy, edit, delete and more. You can edit and delete only your own messages.
## Find the actions
Point to a message. A bar with quick reactions and buttons shows at its top right. Click **More actions** (**⋯**) for every action. You can also right-click the message.
| Action | What it does |
| :--- | :--- |
| Reply | Replies to the message. Your reply shows a preview of it. |
| Create thread | Starts a thread on the message. See [Threads](wiki:785b0aef64bb). |
| Forward | Sends a copy to another channel or person. |
| Copy | Copies the text of the message. If you selected part of the text, only that part is copied. |
| Copy message link | Copies a link that opens the message. Not shown in direct messages. |
| Actions | Runs an action your admin has set up. See [Message actions](wiki:dcf8b2b407bf). |
| Pin | Pins the message to the channel. See [Pin messages](wiki:d0ef48df606e). |
| Save | Saves the message for later. See [Save messages and set reminders](wiki:ca83dcfa7119). |
| Remind me | Reminds you about the message later. See [Save messages and set reminders](wiki:ca83dcfa7119). |
| View reactions | Shows who reacted, and with what. See [Emoji and reactions](wiki:ea5fa90f4f49). |
| Read by | Shows who has read the message. |
| Edit | Changes the text of your message. |
| Delete | Deletes your message. |
Messages with files have more actions, such as **Download**. See [Files and links](wiki:826558742f8b).
## Reply to a message
1. Point to the message and click **Reply**, or choose **Reply** from **More actions**.
2. Type your reply. A preview of the message you are replying to shows above your text.
3. Send.
To cancel the reply, click the **x** on the preview, or press **Esc**.
In the conversation, your reply shows the message it answers. Click that preview to go to the message.
## Edit a message
1. Point to your message and click **Edit**.
2. Change the text.
3. Click **Save**, or press **Enter**.
Press **Esc** or click **Cancel** to stop editing without saving. Edited messages show **(edited)** after the text.
To edit your last message quickly, press the **Up arrow** key while the message box is empty.
If you delete all the text of a message and save, the message is deleted. For a message with files, only the text is removed.
## Delete a message
1. Point to your message and click **More actions** (**⋯**).
2. Click **Delete**.
3. Click **Delete** to confirm.
The message is removed for everyone in the conversation. This can't be undone. If you sent several files together, choose which of them to delete.
## Forward a message
1. Point to the message and click **More actions** (**⋯**).
2. Click **Forward**.
3. Search for a channel or a person, and click it.
4. Click **Forward to** and the name.
The copy shows **Forwarded** above it. Files sent together with the message are forwarded with it. Polls can't be forwarded.
## Copy a link to a message
Click **Copy message link** in **More actions**. Anyone who can see the conversation can open the link. When you paste the link in a message, it shows a card that opens the message.
## Read receipts
**Read by** lists the people who have read a message. To stop others seeing when you have read their messages, turn off **Read receipts** in **Settings > Preferences**. When it is off, you also can't see read receipts on messages.
## On the mobile app
Touch and hold a message to see its actions. To reply, you can also swipe the message to the right.
