What is a channel

A channel is a place for one topic, team or project. Each channel belongs to a workspace, and is listed in the sidebar under the workspace name.

Channel types

Each channel has one of three types. The icon next to the channel name shows the type.

Type Icon Who can see it
Open Globe Everyone in the workspace is a member. Nobody can leave.
Public # Anyone in the workspace can find it, read it and join it.
Private Lock Only members can see it. People join when a channel admin adds them.

A channel admin can change the type later. See Change, archive or delete a channel.

The top of a channel

  • Click the star to add the channel to Favorites at the top of the sidebar.
  • Click the channel name to open its files, links, threads, settings and members. See Channel files, links, threads and pins.
  • The pin icon shows how many messages are pinned in the channel. It shows only when at least one message is pinned. Click it to see the pinned messages.
  • The photos on the right show some of the members. Click them to see everyone in the channel.

Channel admins

The person who creates a channel is its first admin. A channel can have more than one admin. In the members list, admins have an Admin badge.

Channel admins can:

  • Change the channel name, description and type.
  • Archive, unarchive or delete the channel.
  • Add people, remove people, and make other members admins.

A Raven Admin who is a member of the channel can do the same, except remove people.

If the only admin leaves, the member who joined the channel first becomes the new admin.
