What is a workspace
A workspace is a group of channels and the people in them. A company can have one workspace, or one for each team, office or group of customers.
Direct messages are not part of a workspace. You see them from every workspace.
Switch workspaces
The workspaces you are in are listed in the left rail, below the Threads button. Click a logo to open that workspace. A red badge shows the number of unread messages in it.
You can also click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar and pick another workspace from the list.

| Shortcut | Windows and Linux | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Next workspace | Ctrl + Alt + Down arrow | ⌘ + Option + Down arrow |
| Previous workspace | Ctrl + Alt + Up arrow | ⌘ + Option + Up arrow |
To change the order of your workspaces, drag a logo up or down in the left rail. The order is kept for your account, so it is the same on every device.
Public and private workspaces
| Type | Who can see it | Who can join |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Everyone on the site. | Anyone can join by themselves. |
| Private | Only its members. | Only people a workspace admin adds. |
See all workspaces
Go to Settings > Workspaces. The list shows every workspace you can see, its type, and whether you are a member or an admin.

If there is a public workspace you are not in, a ⋯ button shows below the workspace logos in the left rail. Click it to open this list.
Join a workspace
- Go to Settings > Workspaces.
- Click ⋮ at the end of the workspace's row.
- Click Join.
The workspace is added to the left rail. To join a private workspace, ask one of its admins to add you.
Leave a workspace
- Go to Settings > Workspaces.
- Click ⋮ at the end of the workspace's row.
- Click Leave, then click Leave again to confirm.
When you leave, you are also removed from all its channels. You can join a public workspace again at any time. To get back into a private workspace, an admin has to add you.
On the mobile app
Tap the workspace name at the top of the Home tab, or touch and hold Home. A sheet shows your workspaces at the top and your unread channels below them. A red dot on a logo means the workspace has unread messages.
- Tap a logo to switch to that workspace.
- To join a workspace, tap + after the logos, then tap Join next to the workspace. The + shows only when there is a public workspace you are not in.
- Touch and hold a logo to rearrange. Drag logos to change their order, or tap − on a logo to leave that workspace. Tap Done when you finish.
