Send messages

Write in the message box at the bottom of a channel, thread or direct message. Everyone in the conversation sees your message as soon as you send it.

Write and send

  1. Click the message box.
  2. Type your message.
  3. Press Enter to send, or click Send.

A message typed in the message box

Press Shift + Enter to start a new line. Inside a list or a code block, Enter adds a new line or list item. Press Ctrl + Enter to send from there, or ⌘ + Enter on a Mac.

Make Enter start a new line

  1. Open Settings > Preferences.
  2. Change Enter key behaviour to Start a new line.

Now Enter starts a new line. Press Ctrl + Enter to send, or ⌘ + Enter on a Mac.

If a message does not send

A message that could not be sent shows Failed to send under it. Click Retry to send it again, or Discard to remove it.

If you send while files are still uploading, the button shows Sending.... The message goes out when the uploads finish.

On the mobile app

Tap the message box to type, then tap the send button. On the mobile app, Enter always starts a new line. Tap + to add a photo from the camera or your library, a file, a poll or a document.
